Skilled Independent (subclass 189) Visa

This visa is to invite workers and New Zealand citizens with desired skills, to work and reside permanently anywhere in Australia

POINTS-TESTED STREAM

This visa permits you: โ€“

  • to enroll in a study course or do job anywhere in Australia
  • sponsor your relatives to come to Australia
  • Eligibility to apply for Australian citizenship.
  • stay in Australia permanently
  • Travel inside or outside Australia for 5 years.
  • Travel: โ€“ Travel inside or outside Australia for 5 years.
  • In case you want to travel after the initial 5 yearโ€™s travel facility.
  • You will have to apply for and be granted a Resident-Return (RRV) to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.

 Duration of Stay: โ€“

  1. As it is a permanent visa, you can stay for an indefinite time.
  2. Your permanent residence starts on the day
  3. of the grant of the visa for citizenship, if inshore.
  4. Applicant enters Australia on this visa, if offshore.

Family: โ€“

  •  Family members can be added to the application too if they currently hold an eligible visa.
  • Family members must be included at the time of lodge of your application
  • They can be added after you lodge the application, but before deciding on your visa.
  • Family members, applying for the visa must qualify health and character requirements of Australian Government.

If the applicantโ€™s partner or dependent children are not included in this application, he/she need to give the reason.

Cost

First Installment: โ€“ For the main applicant, the visa costs AUD4,045. Additional charges are there for other family applicants applying

Second Installment: โ€“ Family members having age 18 years or above need to pay Second Installment, those who:

  1. Applies with the applicant for this visa.
  2. Has less than Functional English.
  3. Pay the second installment only when asked to. It is charged only if a visa is going to be granted.
  4. Other costs include are those of health checks, police certificates, and biometrics.
  5. The second installment charge for family members is AUD4,885.

Places to Apply From: โ€“

  • You must be inside or outside Australia when you apply and during the decision of the visa, but not in immigration clearance.
  • If you apply in Australia, you must hold:
  • a substantive visa or
  • a Subclass 010 Bridging A visa,
  • a Subclass 020 Bridging B visa or
  • a Subclass 030 Bridging C visa,
  • otherwise, your application will not be valid.

Processing time

  • 75% of applications: 9 months
  • 90% of applications: 19 month

  • You must have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • Applicant needs to be invited to apply for this visa
  • Applicant must satisfy the points test: you must be able to score 65 points or more.
  • You need to have an occupation on the relevant skilled list
  • Family members, applying for the visa must qualify health and character requirements of the Australian Government.
  • Family members, even if not migrating to Australia, might also have to qualify for health and character requirements.
  • Applicant must meet the Health and Character needs
  • Applicants of need to have Competent English at the time of invitation.
  • Australian Values Statement: โ€“ You must sign the Australian values statement, which assures that you will abide by all Australian laws and will respect their way of living.
  • Have paid Outstanding debt (if any) to the Australian Government: โ€“
  • If the applicant or any family member of the applicant owes any debt to the Australian Government, it must be paid back
  • AGE: Your age needs to be under 45 when invited for the visa to apply. You can still apply for the visa if you turn 45 after we invite you to apply.
